FCS College Football Week 7 Preview & Picks Recap

The FCS College Football Experience on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network continues its Week 7 preview and picks, as Pick Dundee (@TheColbyD) and Ryan McIntyre (@Moneyline_Mac) go game by game through the FCS Week 7 picks card with a third man in the booth from Phil Steele Publications.

Can Sacred Heart cover 12.5 against Hampton? Is A&T only laying 13.5 against Chicago State? Can North Dakota hang with South Dakota State getting 11.5 at the Alerus Center? Is Mississippi Valley State for real after winning three of five? Can Northern Colorado handle Cal Poly on a cold night in Greeley? We talk it all and more on this episode of The College Football Experience.

Valley State Keeps Living In The Fourth Quarter

Last week’s FCS slate gave the crew plenty to chew on before a single line came up. Northern Arizona knocked off Montana, and Chris Van Dine (@ChrisV160) isn’t ready to call NAU a true contender yet. Portland State also destroyed Utah Tech. Then there is Mississippi Valley State, which has now won three of five under Terrell Buckley. Valley State trailed Prairie View 24-0 and still found a way. A week earlier it was down 31-14 to Texas Southern at the start of the fourth quarter. So Colby Dant admits he did not have that on his bingo card. Meanwhile Prairie View lost to Southern, and nobody on the show saw that coming.

Who is the best team in the subdivision right now? Tarleton made its case by edging Austin Peay in a one-score game. That one stung Ryan McIntyre, whose Governors loss came on top of another rough West Virginia weekend. But he still has South Dakota State on top because that Northwestern loss ages better. Van Dine agrees and keeps the Jackrabbits at number one. He also thought they would challenge Montana State for the title this year. Northern Iowa sits at three and two with wins over North Dakota and Illinois State. But that schedule down the stretch looks like too much, and Van Dine called the North Dakota result a misleading final.

The Triple Locks Leading FCS Week 7 Picks

The card opens at Franklin Field, where Penn lays 6.5 against a Columbia team that is three and one. Colby Dant never wants to lay more than a touchdown in the Ivy. But 6.5 sits right under that number, so he is on the Quakers. Ryan McIntyre rides Penn as well. Van Dine leans Penn without betting it, since the starting quarterback got hurt early last week. Then comes Hampton at Sacred Heart, with the Pioneers laying 12.5. Hampton has lost five straight and is 0-2 on the road, so both hosts lock Sacred Heart. Van Dine locks the under 44.5 instead, because all six Sacred Heart games have stayed under.

The first triple lock lands on North Carolina A&T at 13.5 against Chicago State. A&T just beat New Hampshire outright. They also lost to Bryant by one after holding a double-digit lead with a minute and a half left. Chicago State is awful, so the only worry Van Dine can find is homecoming distractions. He wants in before the number climbs toward two touchdowns. Then Robert Morris lays 10.5 against one-and-five New Haven, and all three ride Bobby Mo again. Van Dine points to Carson Haggard’s 15-to-3 ratio. Colby Dant adds that the Colonials should have beaten Buffalo, which just beat Toledo.

Princeton Rolls And Yale Stays A Wagon

Princeton is minus 5.5 against Brown with a total of 35.5, and Colby Dant locks Princeton. They have won three straight behind running back Kai Honda. In his previous Ivy League game, Honda ran for 219 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. Ryan McIntyre also rides the Princeton momentum. Van Dine found the sharper angle on the total. Both teams have gone under in all four games, but the last seven meetings averaged 66 combined points. Last year finished 40-21, and the year before was 29-17. And James Murphy, sitting on a 0-7 ratio, has to throw a touchdown pass eventually. So Van Dine locks the over, and Colby Dant plans to sprinkle it too.

Yale lays 10.5 against Rhode Island at the Yale Bowl, and Colby Dant is ready to blind bet Yale for a while. The Bulldogs beat Dartmouth 28-7 and outgained them 537 to 225. Rhode Island, meanwhile, already lost by 32 at Stony Brook and fell at A&T. Van Dine locks Yale too, so it becomes a double lock. Ryan McIntyre likes Yale but stays off. Then the Pioneer League gets its spotlight in Des Moines. Drake lays 5.5 against Marist, and Van Dine is riding quarterback Riley Wodzinski off a four-interception game. Colby Dant sees Marist’s pass defense as the clear weakness, so all three lock Drake.

North Dakota Gets The Points In The Alerus Center

Merrimack plus 11.5 at Dartmouth turned into another triple lock. Van Dine says Merrimack is consistently undervalued as a road dog. He also compared how the two teams handled Yale on the road. Merrimack lost there by 17 and was outgained by 154 yards. Dartmouth lost by 21 and got outgained by 312. On the 47.5 total, their computer projects 24-15, so the lean is under. Then Maine becomes the get-right spot after five straight losses. Colby Dant wants Maine to beat Bryant outright at home. Van Dine calls Bryant’s four-and-one start fake, and Ryan McIntyre locks Maine.

The biggest game of the week puts South Dakota State at North Dakota, with the Fighting Sioux getting 11.5 at home. Van Dine locks the dog because North Dakota is 11-2 as a home dog over the last eight years. Their computer projects 34-22 but also gives North Dakota a 373-to-339 yardage edge. The catch is quarterback Jerry Kaminsky, who is listed week to week with an ankle injury. That gave Van Dine some pause. But the guys figure he plays through it in a game this big. So Colby Dant and Ryan McIntyre both bet North Dakota too.

Lehigh, Gardner-Webb And The Back Half Locks

Lehigh lays 10.5 at Cornell after drilling Fordham 34-0, and Colby Dant circled this one. Lehigh has the second-best rushing attack in the FCS. He doubts Cornell’s top-30 run defense, figuring it came against pass-happy teams. Van Dine calls Lehigh the best team in the conference, so it is a double lock. Next, Alabama A&M lays 6.5 against Grambling. A&M is 4-0 at home while Grambling is 0-2 on the road. So Colby Dant and Ryan McIntyre both lay it. Van Dine likes the over 58.5 instead, because Grambling just scored 63 on Alcorn and 45 on Jackson State.

Gardner-Webb at minus 2.5 against UT Martin became the next triple lock. Van Dine threw out last week’s loss to Eastern Illinois. Cole Pennington didn’t play in a wet, ugly game. Gardner-Webb still won the yardage 246 to 174 but finished minus six turnovers. So Ryan McIntyre and Colby Dant followed him in. Van Dine also locks Western Illinois plus 5.5 at SEMO and thinks the Leathernecks can win outright. Then he locks Fordham plus 8.5 against Villanova. Villanova is two and four with a loss to Morgan State, while Fordham just beat Richmond on the road.

Colby Dant locks San Diego minus 4.5 against Valpo on the travel angle. Valpo has to fly all the way out to the coast. Van Dine also notes San Diego is 7-2 ATS as a home favorite the last three years. Then the ESPNU game splits the room. Colby Dant locks Illinois State, figuring this game has been on their mind all year. But Van Dine and Ryan McIntyre take Southern Illinois as a home dog. The Salukis drilled the Redbirds by 30 last year and still got left out of the playoff.

Van Dine also bets Stephen F. Austin minus 21.5 against Nicholls, a team that lost by 31 at home to Lamar. He backs Lamar minus 5.5 at Southeastern Louisiana as well. A 58-yard fumble return made last week’s win over Incarnate Word look closer than it was. Earlier, Colby Dant locked Weber State plus 7.5 against Idaho State in Ogden. Weber runs for 192 yards a game, and Idaho State is a dome team heading into October weather. Ryan McIntyre rides the home dog too.

Shark Meat, Tigers And A Freeze Warning In Greeley

Late in the card, Long Island lays 6.5 against Wagner, and Colby Dant says he never loses money on LIU. Ryan McIntyre can’t believe the line is that short. Van Dine wants some Shark Meat too, so it is another triple lock. Next, Morgan State is five and one but lays only 6.5 at one-and-five Tennessee State. Van Dine’s AGG has Morgan State by just 1.2, so all three take Tennessee State. Colby Dant also bets Youngstown State plus 18.5 against Northern Iowa. Van Dine has Youngstown State too and notes Northern Iowa had 144 yards last week.

Portland State gets 18.5 at NAU, and Colby Dant locks the Vikings plus the over. He sees a letdown spot for NAU right after the Montana win. Van Dine locks Portland State as well. Houston Christian minus 2.5 is a double lock. Their computer has Houston Christian by four and the AGG by 5.2. UC Davis minus 5.5 against Southern Utah is another double lock, since Southern Utah just gave up 572 yards to Utah Tech. Then it closes in Greeley. Northern Colorado catches more than a field goal against Cal Poly with a freeze warning for an 8 p.m. kick. Cal Poly is on the second leg of a road back-to-back after Pocatello. That makes it a triple lock on the boys from Greeley.
