MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 8th

Cleveland Guardians vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 8:00 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – TBS

With just one game on the schedule for today, this game gets moved to the night slot. As we usually are, we’re all over the NRFI in a Parker Messick start and that’s for two reasons. The first reason is that Parker Messick is a force. He’s likely a finalist for the AL Rookie of the Year Award with an outside chance to win it. He put up the 6th best ERA amongst qualified pitchers this year and fanned 193 batters (good for 15th in the majors). I’d take him to quiet even the loudest of offenses.

The other reason why we like the NRFI during Messick starts is the offense of the Guardians. They ranked 24th in runs per game this year and have scored just 12 runs in this postseason (4.00 per game). It won’t help matters that Hagen Smith is getting an opener slot either. While I generally don’t love openers for NRFI spots, he did put up a 1.29 ERA during the regular season. Not once did his monthly ERA get above 1.59. He’s also already put up an empty first frame with an opener spot in Game 1. He should be able to do it again here, which makes it not just one of my favorite NRFI and YRFI picks for October 8, but the entire postseason.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 8: No (-170)
