We hit a rare YRFI play on Monday with Detroit putting up a two-spot in the first inning. We’ll look to build on that mometum going into Tuesday. We have some NRFI bets for September 21.

MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 22
Cleveland Guardians vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA

To start off this NRFI play, we’ll look to a team with one of the worst offenses this year. The Guardians have been bad from start to finish. Currently, their 4.16 runs per game has them ranking 26th in the majors and they were again held to one run on Sunday. Now they have the ill fate of facing Payton Tolle to kick off this series. Tolle is making a late run for Rookie of the Year. He’s knocked his ERA down to 3.02 and is up to 166 strikeouts in just 143.0 innings. Over his last two starts (12.0 innings), he’s allowed just one run while fanning 19 batters. The first inning of this one should be a breeze for him.
The bottom of the first features another pitcher who might be vying for the Rookie of the Year selection. Parker Messick is rocking a 2.57 ERA on the year and is into the top 15 when it comes to strikeouts. He’s held opponents to just one run in four of his last six starts. We’ll need him to find three quick outs against a Red Sox team that struggles in the first. They rank 28th in the majors in first inning scoring – only ahead of the Blue Jays and Padres.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 22: No (-170)
Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees (Game 2)
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV
The offenses in this one are a little scarier. Both of these teams have been near the top of the league in terms of scoring all year. However, the Rays have fallen off as of late. They’ve dropped just to the edge of the top 10 and have fallen below average when it comes to scoring in the first inning. The Yankees have taken a similar dive. They’re down to 9th in the league in scoring and 19th in first inning scoring. Some of that is likely due to Aaron Judge missing time, which helps to keep the ball in the park early.
These pitchers will also help keep the ball in the park early. Drew Rasmussen enters action with a 2.72 ERA on the year, but that doesn’t begin to tell the story of how good he’s been lately. In his last five starts, he’s allowed just five earned runs for a 1.15 ERA. His counterpart isn’t far behind his marks. Max Fried will do battle with him and has also been dominating lately. He has also allowed just five runs over his last five starts – putting up a 1.90 ERA in that time. Neither has an issue with getting outs, particularly early in the game.
