MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 20

Atlanta Braves vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Braves get first cuts in this one and to say they’ve been struggling at the plate is an understatement. Their runs per game has dropped by over half a run per game in the second half. Additionally, they’ve fallen to 24th in the league in first inning scoring without a first inning run in a week. That’s a terrible set of trends when you have to face Hunter Brown. He has held five of his last six opponents to two runs or fewer. He’s also fanned 43 batters in 33.1 innings in that span for 11.61 strikeouts per nine innings.

The Astros are not exactly setting the world on fire with the bats either. They’ve scored just 18 runs over their last five games (heading into Saturday) for an average of 3.60 runs per game. That’s good news for NRFI bettors and for Martin Perez, who gets the start for the Braves to close out the weekend. He is rocking a 3.07 ERA on the year and just cracked 100 strikeouts on the year. Since the start of August, he’s put up a 2.28 ERA and has only once gone over two runs in a start.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 20: No (TBD)

Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

People have been hating on the year that Davis Martin has had, but the White Sox righty has been locked in lately. This month (three starts) has seen him post a 1.13 ERA. While the strikeout numbers aren’t there, you have to like the fact that he’s keeping nearly everyone in the park. The Tigers are above average when it comes to run production, but have been held to just one run in three of their last four games. That should help Martin get us three quick outs.

To close this NRFI out, we’ve got Troy Melton and his 2.52 ERA on the bump. He’s been hit a little harder lately, but overall has been sharp on the season. The White Sox got a sneaky first inning run on Jackson Jobe, but ultimately were pretty quiet early on Saturday. Melton should help us get a clean first frame and a second NRFI cash.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 20: No (TBD)

Bonus Pick: Brewers/Orioles NRFI (TBD)
