MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 17

Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off this NRFI spot will be NL Rookie of the Year candidate Nolan McLean. The young righty had a little trouble in Yankee Stadium last time out, but had previously been on a run that included five straight starts with two runs or less allowed. Even with the slip up in his last start, he comes out with a 2.25 ERA over the last month. He gets a Phillies team that is just middle of the pack in scoring and is in a bit of a drought. They have scored just 20 runs over their last five games (going into Wednesday), which comes out to 4.00 runs per game. Considering nine of those runs came in one game, they really are in a bit of a rut.

The Mets, meanwhile, are in a rut that dates all the way back to April. They rank in the bottom third of the league in scoring and have already been eliminated from playoff contention for some time. Going into Wednesday, they had scored just six runs over their last six games. A date with Aaron Nola is unlikely to help that. Despite not having the numbers he’s posted in the past, he’s been sharp lately. He’s allowed two or less runs in six straight starts and has a 1.98 ERA in that span.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 17: No (TBD)

Minnesota Twins vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Minnesota is not one of those offenses that we look to fade. In fact, they have been above average all year and have plenty to be worried about. However, this NRFI play is not about them at all. Instead, we’re putting our faith in Walbert Urena. The 22-year old rookie has a 2.88 ERA on the year and has shown flashes of big strikeout stuff. Additionally, he’s just one start removed from a one-run complete game against a tough Pirates lineup. We’ll only need one empty frame for him to help us cash this one.

To close this one out, we’re back to fading the bad offenses. The Angels rank 29th in the majors in runs scored – only ahead of the Blue Jays. Not only is the offense looking spotty, but they have a tough matchup with Taj Bradley toeing the rubber. Bradley looked untouchable last time out, surrendering just one hit over 6.0 scoreless innings against Cleveland. With another brutal lineup against him, he should breeze through again.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 17: No (TBD)

Bonus Pick: Athletics/Rays NRFI (TBD)
