MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 7
Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Bryan Bello kicks off this NRFI for us and that’s likely to make some people nervous. Despite being very good out of the bullpen, Bello has not been a shining star as a starter. However, Bello has two things going for him here. Firstly, he has five straight appearances where he recorded three outs before allowing a run. That may not be much to some people, but for an NRFI bettor, it’s a great sign. He also has the benefit of facing an Angels team that has scored just 12 runs in their last five games (2.40 per game).
Closing out this NRFI will be Grayson Rodriguez – perhaps another starter that doesn’t have people running to the ticket window. While those season-long numbers are a bit hairy, he has been sharp in his last three games. He’s posted a 2.41 ERA in that span and has struck out nearly a batter per inning. The Red Sox rank 27th in the majors in first inning scoring, so he should be able to get this one started right for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 7: No (-115)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Athletics
First Pitch – 10:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park– Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
For our second selection, we’ll head to the nightcap out in Sacramento. The Athletics will trust Jacob Lopez to get the job done. And they have plenty of reason to believe he will. The man had himself an August – posting a 2.48 ERA in the month and fanning 25 in just 29.0 innings of work. Now he’ll get the Blue Jays, which is about as easy an ask as you can get this year. They rank 29th in the majors in scoring and 28th in first inning scoring. He should breeze through those first three outs.
To close out this NRFI spot, we get the man who is currently second in AL Cy Young odds, Dylan Cease. Cease has a 2.24 ERA, which puts him in the top five of the entire league. He’s also top five when it comes to strikeouts as he sits at 221 for the season. Over the past two months (11 starts), he’s held five of those opponents scoreless. In that run, he has a 1.36 ERA and is using that late season push for serious award consideration. Although the Athletics are better than the Blue Jays at the plate, they are still a below average offense facing one of the best pitchers in the majors.
