MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 5

Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 6:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off this NRFI will be one of the frontrunners for Rookie of the Year voting in the American League. Parker Messick will be on the hill and his recent performance is helping him gain ground on the others vying for that award. In his last three starts, he’s logged 18.1 innings and allowed just three total runs. That comes out to a 1.47 ERA over that span and he added 19 strikeouts to his total. Detroit is a below average scoring team, ranking 19th in the majors in runs per game. Messick should have no problem keeping his hot streak intact on Saturday.

Cleveland has a pitcher we want to tail and a lineup we want to fade – which is ideal for NRFIs. The Guardians currently rank 27th in run scoring and are just a whisper above 4.00 runs per game. That’s excellent news for Framber Valdez, who is beginning to find his form this season. He put up a 3.86 ERA in the month of August and faced three of the toughest lineups in all of the majors. This will be a nice break for him and he should be able to help us close this one out.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 5: No (-150)

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

Jacob deGrom has started to look more and more like the Jacob deGrom of old, and that’s something we’re going to exploit for the NRFI market. In two of his last three starts, he’s held opponents scoreless over 6.0 and 7.0 innings respectively. The Rays are kicking right around league average when it comes to scoring, but they are much worse in the early parts of the game. They rank in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring.

Wrapping up our last half inning in this NRFI is Drew Rasmussen. He carries a 2.95 ERA into action this weekend, which puts him 11th in the majors. He’s also third in the majors in WHIP with a 0.93 mark. The wild part of that is that these numbers have actually been improving as he gets late into the season. He should continue to improve that against the Rangers, who rank 26th in the majors in scoring. Three outs should look like a cake walk here on the road.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 5: No (-140)

Bonus Pick: Athletics/Mariners NRFI (-125)
