MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 4

Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – ESPN

You aren’t going to find a much better pitching matchup in all of baseball at the moment. The men sitting at #2 and #3 in terms of current odds for the NL Cy Young do battle on Friday. Cristopher Sanchez and his 202 strikeouts will be on the bump first. However, his 2.52 ERA pales in comparison to his counterpart, Chris Sale, who is rocking a 2.06 ERA. Sale is also fresh off of a complete game shutout of the Dodgers in which he didn’t walk a batter and allowed just five hits.

In addition to these two having live arms on the hill, they have dead bats at the plate as well. The Braves, who started the year red hot, have scored the least number of runs in the National League since August 1st. They hung nine on the Nationals on Wednesday, but this is a very different pitching scenario here.

The Phillies have been cool lately as well. Despite going 6-3 in their last nine games, they are only averaging 3.56 runs per game. To add to that, they are fresh off of being shutout in a bullpen game for the Diamondbacks. If that bullpen can keep them quiet for nine innings, Chris Sale should be able to for three outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 4: No (TBD)

San Francisco Giants vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

There aren’t a ton of bright spots for the Mets this year, but Nolan McLean might be the brightest. He’s carried an ERA of 3.06, which puts him in the top 15 of the majors this season. He’s also in the top 15 of strikeouts. Facing the Giants should help matters. They rank in the bottom third of the league in runs per game and somehow are even worse in the first inning. They rank 28th in the majors in first inning scoring, which should give McLean an easy start.

The numbers for Matthew “Tugboat” Wilkinson are not nearly as tidy. He hasn’t been the prospect he was hyped to be in his three starts, but he has started all of those games well. He has not allowed a first inning run in any of those starts and has never really been in trouble in those innings either. The Mets are 25th in the majors in scoring, so if someone is going to rock the boat, it isn’t likely to be them.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 4: No (TBD)

Bonus Pick: Blue Jays/Royals NRFI (TBD)
