MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 24

Cleveland Guardians vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off this NRFI on the rubber will be rookie starter George Klassen. The 24-year old righty has been surprisingly good in his first five major league starts, but it’s really the last few where he’s shined. In his last three starts (17.0 innings), he’s allowed just three earned runs for a 1.59 ERA. He’s also fanned 15 in that stretch, which includes a seven strikeout performance last time out against the Astros. Cleveland ranks 27th in the majors in scoring runs, so it should be another good one here for Klassen.

While the rookie Klassen has been hot recently, the rookie Parker Messick has been hot all year. He’s currently a top three choice in terms of odds for Rookie of the Year in the American League. That’s thanks to his 2.54 ERA, which ranks 7th in the majors. He’s also nabbed 152 strikeouts and has a top 10 WHIP in the majors as well. The Angels are nearly as bad as the Guardians at scoring runs, so he shouldn’t have any issues getting us through the first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 24: No (-130)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Diego Padres

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

While the Pirates are a top five team in the majors at scoring runs, they have been much worse when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They rank right at league average when it comes to that metric and you can expect them to look average again on Monday. That’s because Robbie Ray, along with his 3.20 ERA, will toe the rubber. Although his first start after being moved to San Diego was a bit hairy, it was the lone blip on the radar. He’s now held opponents to two or less runs in six of his last seven starts.

Closing out this NRFI play for us is going to be Braxton Ashcraft. While some of the Pirates’ pitching world is on fire (in a bad way), Ashcraft seems bent on becoming the staff ace. All he’s done in his last two starts is put up 17.0 innings and allow just two earned runs (a 1.06 ERA). That includes a 10-strikeout complete game against the Marlins. San Diego hasn’t been lighting it up with the bats either. They rank 28th in the majors in first inning scoring and are in the bottom third of the league in scoring across the full game.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 24: No (-135)

Bonus Pick: Red Sox/Marlins NRFI (-135)

Looking to put together a three-pick parlay? This extra play may just be the piece that you’re looking for. Throw it together with the other two to net a three-pick parlay for +436.
