MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 23

New York Mets vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

Typically, I try to stay away from openers when you look to an NRFI spot, but Sean Newcomb has been dealing for the White Sox this month. Over the month of August, he’s thrown 10.1 innings and has yet to allow an earned run. Not only that, but he’s also only allowed two hits in that span. He gets a break here with the Mets lineup. They rank in the bottom third of scoring and first inning scoring this year. As a result, I like Newcomb’s chances to work his way through the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, we get a team that’s hitting a touch better on the year. However, the White Sox are ice cold at the plate lately. They’ve scored just 17 runs over their last five games (or 3.20 per game). That won’t be an easy trend to shake with Nolan McLean on the bump. He carries a 3.34 ERA into action on Sunday, which puts him in the top 20 in the majors. Not only that, but he also has been particularly sharp in his last couple starts. Over his last two, he’s logged 12.0 innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 23: No (-140)

San Francisco Giants vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 3:15 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – NBC

For our next NRFI, we’re going to trust some youth on the hill. 25-year old rookie Jake Bennett will be the first of those young guns. He has a 3.46 ERA on the year, but that’s not even the best stat for what we’re playing for. Instead let’s look to his first inning ERA instead, which currently sits at 0.00. That’s right, he has not allowed a first inning run in any of the 14 first innings that he’s pitched. San Francisco ranks 29th in the league in first inning scoring, so they hardly seem like the team to break that run.

The second young pitcher we’re trusting is Matthew “Tugboat” Wilkinson. He’ll be making just his second MLB start on Sunday, but he looked sharp in an abbreviated first go. He threw 2.0 clean innings against Seattle with just one hit and no walks. While the Red Sox hover around league average in scoring, they rank way near the bottom of the league early on. They rank 27th in first inning runs on the season and that should be enough to get “Tugboat” going.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 23: No (-135)

Bonus Pick: Braves/Brewers NRFI (-140)
