MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 21

Atlanta Braves vs. Milwaukee Brewers

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI
Broadcast – MLB TV

Sometimes we try to thread the needle with the pitching matchups for our NRFI plays. Sometimes they just land in our lap. This one is one of the latter examples.

Consensus Cy Young frontrunner Jacob Misiorowski gets the ball on Friday. He leads the league in ERA (1.75), strikeouts (210), and WHIP (0.75). He’s not only putting together the best season by a pitcher this year, but in this decade. To add to matters, he gets an ice-cold Atlanta lineup. They’ve scored just 14 runs in their last five games combined for 2.80 runs per game. Add in that they’re in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring, and the top of the first should be no sweat at all.

If there is a threat to Misiorowski’s Cy Young bid, it’s likely Chris Sale – who just so happens to be getting the ball in the bottom of the first. He ranks second in the majors in ERA (2.16) and has struck out at least eight batters in four straight games. While Milwaukee hasn’t exactly had the same offensive woes that the Braves have, I’d pick Sale for an NRFI against an All-Star team.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 21: No (TBD)

Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

While the pitching matchup may not be as star-studded in this one, don’t sleep on Noah Cameron. He’s fresh off a one-hit complete game against the Angels as part of a tremendous run he’s had over the last month. Over his last five starts, he’s posted a 1.19 ERA and fanned 34 batters in the process. The Tigers are averaging just 4.00 runs per game over their last five games. Cameron should be too hot for them to overcome.

Speaking of pitchers that are sneakily on fire, Troy Melton has been pitching out of his mind for the Tigers. Since sending Skubal and Mize away at the break, Melton has pitched like an ace. In three starts, he’s rocking a 1.55 ERA and has twice held opponents without an earned run. Kansas City already ranks in the bottom third of the league when it comes to run scoring and Melton should keep the bad times coming for them.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 21: No (TBD)

Bonus Pick: Mets/White Sox NRFI (TBD)
