MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 20
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Tropicana Park – St. Petersburg, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
If there’s a team to fade at the plate in MLB this year, it is most definitely the Blue Jays. They are not only one of three remaining teams under 4.00 runs per game, but they have maintained the worst rate of scoring in the first inning. They’ll face a formidable arm in Ian Seymour of the Rays. He’s come to live with big strikeout stuff in the month of August. He has 25 strikeouts in just 18.0 innings this month and has posted a 3.00 ERA in the process. He should have no problem working through this Toronto offense.
In the bottom of the first, we have another team that struggles in the first inning. Despite being a slightly above average offense overall, they rank in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. Shane Bieber will be tasked with keeping that trend intact. Although his season numbers don’t exactly instill confidence, he has shown some really positive signs of returning to form. He’s held opponents to one run or less in four of his last six starts. Additionally, he has kept the first frame clean in three straight games. Since that’s all we care about here, he should be able to get the job done for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 20: No (-120)
Athletics vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
Our second NRFI starts with Randy Dobnak toeing the rubber. Since making his return to the majors at the beginning of July, he has been nasty. He’s posted a 1.73 ERA and has only allowed more than two runs in a start once (in eight starts). He’ll get a Athletics lineup that has been limping to the finish line. After a hot start, they’ve fallen into the bottom third of the league when it comes to runs per game. Losers of three straight, they don’t really have the momentum on their side in this one.
Kansas City is one of the few teams that score less runs per game than the Athletics. While they’ve been running a bit hot in this series, Gage Jump should be the perfect pitcher to cool them off. He’s rocking a 4.50 ERA on the year and has shown signs of being truly brilliant. He recently struck out 11 Red Sox over 6.0 innings to pick up the win. If that version of Jump shows up here, we should have no problem cashing this NRFI.
