MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 17
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds (Game 2)
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Cardinals get first hacks in this one and they haven’t exactly been a feared lineup. They are a below average team when it comes to putting runs on the board and facing Rhett Lowder isn’t likely to help that. Lowder hasn’t allowed more than two runs in each of his last four starts – posting a 3.22 ERA in that span. Additionally, he has some solid recent history against the Cardinals. He faced them last month and held them scoreless for the first four innings. He should be able to repeat that here.
Closing out this NRFI will be Andre Pallante. He’s been one of the more underrated pitchers for the Cardinals this year. He enters Monday’s action with a 3.46 ERA and has been even better over the last month. In that time, he’s racked up 24.2 innings and allowed just three earned runs (a 1.09 ERA). That includes a 7.0 inning scoreless performance against these very Reds where he fanned a season-high eight strikeouts. Add in that Cincinnati is 25th in the majors in scoring and this should be an easy one for the NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 17: No (-115)
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Our second selection starts with an opener. While I typically like to shy away from openers in NRFI situations, this is slightly different. Alec Gamboa has been solid for Boston since returning to the majors in July. He’s thrown 15.1 innings since that time and has allowed just three earned runs. He’s rocking a 1.59 ERA and has been inducing a lot of ground balls. That should play well with the top of this Diamondbacks order, which does not strike out a ton.
Closing out the NRFI, we have one of the worst first inning teams in the league. The Red Sox rank 26th in terms of first inning scoring, and despite a recent hot streak, aren’t much better across the game. They’re still well below average in run scoring in general and facing the rookie Mitch Bratt may not help all that much. Over his last three starts, Bratt has put up a 1.50 ERA and struck out 15 batters. He should be able to ride that momentum to a clean first frame.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 17: No (-120)
Bonus Pick: White Sox/Cubs NRFI (-120)
Looking to put together a three-pick parlay? This extra play may just be the piece that you’re looking for. Throw it together with the other two to net a three-pick parlay for +528.
