New Data Reveals America’s Most Bet-On Event of 2026

Sweepspulse.com has recently published results of a study showing that the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final was the largest wagered upon event by Americans as of July 2026. The platform used U.S.-based gaming site traffic (and wagering activity) to measure how much attention and money were being spent at each U.S.-based gaming platform throughout the World Cup.

The 2026 World Cup was held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico for the first time; as such, American interest in the tournament exceeded previous levels for a soccer tournament. Additionally, the World Cup was expanded to 48 teams this year which extended the length of time platforms could continue to engage with the same users throughout the month-long tournament.

Some key results from the study include:

  • A significantly greater percentage of all bets placed on the final match than on any other single event monitored in 2026; exceeding typical market leaders such as the Super Bowl and March Madness.
  • Mobile devices represented a significant portion of all bets placed on the final match. This is consistent with an overall trend towards mobile-based wagering.
  • Bets placed in real-time or on same-day increased exponentially as kickoff approached.
  • A meaningful number of “first-time” bettors participated in the World Cup; it appears many individuals who do not regularly participate in sports betting activities did take advantage of the opportunity to place a wager on the World Cup.
  • Users of parlay/multi-bet formats showed an increase in participation above average participation rates when compared to users placing standard single-wager bets.

While there are several reasons why there was such an increase in U.S. betting in relation to this tournament, analysts argue that the fact that it was being held in North America was by far the largest reason. The fact that Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans were able to watch all games in their respective time zones created a sense of normalcy that did not exist at previous World Cup tournaments. Most of the early morning matches in previous World Cups would take place while most people in the United States were asleep. As a result, when a large number of the teams competing in those early morning games made deep runs into the tournament, they would not receive much coverage and thus interest in them would be limited. In addition, because the games were taking place so late, fans would not have had much of a chance to learn about new players or develop a favorite team. By having all the games play during daylight hours (or at least after work), a significantly greater amount of exposure was given to each participating country and thus a significantly larger number of fans became interested.

Another way the 2018 World Cup generated interest in soccer and therefore betting is through its ability to attract what would otherwise be considered casual soccer fans. Casual soccer fans are defined as individuals who do not normally follow professional soccer or make regular wagers on sports. Historically, major international sporting events have been capable of expanding a platform’s reach to include casual users, and the 2018 World Cup was no exception. These casual fans likely participated in the betting market via small, low-stakes wagers as opposed to placing larger single wagers. Therefore, it can be inferred that the casual nature of these fans’ involvement played a larger role than using a proven betting strategy.

A third area is that the use of mobile devices is becoming the preferred means of interacting with sports betting platforms. With more and more people wanting to quickly access a platform and begin wagering immediately, if a user cannot quickly get onto a platform, they will abandon it before even beginning to wager. As a result, platforms are redesigning their on-boarding process and lobby layout based on mobile screens, viewing desktop as the secondary experience instead of the primary. It should come as little surprise then that mobile traffic spiked dramatically during the Final compared to other days of the week.
