MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 14
Miami Marlins vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 6:10 pm EST
Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
Kicking off this NRFI will be the top of the Marlins lineup. They had a miniture hot streak that came crashing to en end with a 13-1 loss on Thursday. That’s more of the offense that we’re used to – they rank in the bottom half of the league in scoring and bottom third in first inning production. None of that is going to improve with Chase Burns staring them down. He’s rocking a 2.61 ERA on the year, which has him 7th amongst qualified pitchers. He is also in the top 25 of nearly every major pitching category in the league. Look for him to fan a few and get out of this first inning unscathed.
The Reds busted out of their slump with nine runs on Thursday, but had scored just 11 in the five games prior combined. That run dropped them to 25th in the majors in run scoring and that’s a daunting fact when you have to face Sandy Alcantara. It’s been 24 inning since Alcantara has allowed a run of any kind – even unearned. We’re also seeing an uptick in strikeouts. If someone is going to end that run, it isn’t going to be the Reds in this first inning.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 14: No (TBD)
Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Diamondbacks are another team who I like to fade in the first inning. While they are an average offensive squad, they rank in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. That should be music to Chris Sale’s ears as he toes the rubber looking to make up some ground on Jacob Misiorowski in the NL Cy Young race. Sale has a 2.20 ERA on the year and has already fanned 151 batters. He should be able to get this started right.
And to close this one out, we’ll fade the Braves lineup, which has been quiet recently. They scored six runs on Thursday and that was more than any of the last six games they had played against the New York teams. Additionally, they’re 24th in the majors in first inning scoring and have a tall ask ahead of them in Brandon Pfaadt. Pfaadt is another pitcher who has not allowed an earned run in over 24 innings. The Braves may be the team to get to him, but I’ll take my chances on the first three outs.
