MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 12

Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Red Sox may be one of the hottest teams in baseball, but there is still value in fading them for an NRFI. They’ve been one of the worst teams in the league in the first inning – ranking 26th in scoring runs early. Additionally, despite their big run, they’re nothing more than a middle of the pack team offensively. That should work out well for Jose Soriano in his second start for the Blue Jays. He was sharp in his first shot with the club, which is part of a hot streak overall. He’s posted a 1.62 ERA over his last three starts with 15 strikeouts.

If the Red Sox are a team we can feel good about fading, then we can feel great about fading the Blue Jays. Their offense is atrocious. They are one of just three teams that have less than 4.00 runs per game and nobody has scored less first inning runs than they have. That should be music to the ears of Ranger Suarez, who is on the bump for this one. He enters action with a 3.38 ERA and has given us three straight clean opening frames. Considering I would take a pitching machine to shut the Blue Jays out, I like his chances to make it four straight in this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 12: No (-155)

New York Mets vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Tyler Mahle toes the rubber first in this one. Perhaps it was a bit of a head scratcher when the Braves made him the cornerstone of their trade deadline, but he made them look smart in his debut for the team. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings against the Yankees, only allowing three hits while fanning nine. He’ll get a Mets team who ranks in the bottom third of nearly every offensive category and has been shutout in two of their last four games – including Tuesday night.

To close out this NRFI, we’ll lean on the arm of Zac Thorton. He carries a 2.52 ERA into action on Wednesday and, like Mahle, is fresh off a solid start. He went 5.0 scoreless innings against one of the best run scoring teams in the majors – the Pirates. The Braves can be a potent offense, but they’re in a bit of a lull. They’ve scored just 17 runs over the last five games (or 3.40 runs per game). Thorton should be able to work through three outs and get this to cash.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 12: No (-125)

Bonus Pick: Mariners/Yankees NRFI (-120)
