MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 8
Los Angeles Angels vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Angels are first to the plate in this selection and they’ve been awful at the plate this year. Their 4.15 runs per game is good enough for 25th in the majors and they’ve somehow been worse lately. In their last five games, they managed just 14 total runs – or 2.80 runs per game. That’s not an easy trend to turn around when you need to face Sandy Alcantara at home. While he’s been good all year, he’s been especially tough in the confines of loanDepot park. Over 11 starts at home, he’s posted a 2.95 ERA and punched out 54 batters with just 20 walks.
Speaking of struggling bats, the Marlins will get the bats second. They rank 19th in the majors in run scoring and are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first. They’ve been even slower with the bats than the Angels over the last week. In their last five games, they’ve scored 11 total runs (or 2.20 per game). That’s music to the ears of Walbert Urena, who has slowly put together one of the most underrated seasons in MLB. He enters action with a 2.54 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 99.1 innings. Plus, he hasn’t allowed more than one earned run in a game since June.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 8: No (-135)
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, AZ
Broadcast – MLB TV
It wasn’t that long ago that we wouldn’t dare to consider the Dodgers for an NRFI spot. However, they have fallen on hard times offensively. During their seven-game losing streak, they are averaging 3.57 runs per game. The Diamondbacks would like nothing better than to add to those woes and Brandon Pfaadt might just be the one to do it. Although his season numbers might still be on the way down, he’s been white hot lately. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 18.2 innings, and he should be able to add at least one more to that.
To close out the NRFI, we’ll get someone in the top five of Cy Young odds for the National League – Yoshinobu Yamamoto. He’s sporting a 2.76 ERA on the year with a microscopic 0.88 WHIP (second best in the majors). He also faced this Diamondbacks team last month and gave us blank frames for the first three innings. I like his chances to do it again here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 8: No (-115)
Bonus Pick: Reds/Nationals NRFI (-120)
Looking to put together a three-pick parlay? This extra play may just be the piece that you’re looking for. Throw it together with the other two to net a three-pick parlay for +496.
