MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 3
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Blue Jays get the first ups in this one and they haven’t really been wowing with the bats lately. They have scored just 20 runs over their last five games, which put them at 4.00 per game in that span. Additionally, they continue to be the worst team in the league when it comes to scoring in the first. Facing Cristian Javier won’t make that any easier. Despite having numbers that seem a touch high to trust for an NRFI, he’s been great since returning from injury. In the month of July, he put up a 3.00 in 12.0 innings of work while fanning 17 batters.
Another guy who has metrics that don’t really match his recent performance is Shane Bieber. His 5.74 ERA doesn’t exactly get you hyped to trust his stuff, nor does his last outing. However, prior to getting ripped by a tough Nationals team, he was cruising. In his three previous starts, he tossed 17.2 innings with just three earned runs allowed. That comes out to a 1.53 ERA in that stretch. The Astros are an above average team, but I think he can get us through three early outs here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 3: No (TBD)
San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Chase Field – Phoenix, AZ
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Padres swing in the top of the first and they’ve been a team to fade at the plate. They rank in the bottom third of run scoring and are 28th in the majors in first inning production. That’s music to the ears of Brandon Pfaadt, who has been on a nice little run in his last few starts. July saw him post a 1.88 ERA and drop his season ERA nearly a point and a half. He’s coming off his best outing – holding a tough Pittsburgh lineup scoreless for 7.0 innings. If he can do that to the Pirates, the Padres should be a breeze.
Arizona is a bit better at the plate this year, but they are another team that ranks in the bottom third of the league in first inning production. They’ve gone four straight games without a first inning score and now will have to deal with Michael King. King carries a 3.38 ERA into action on Monday and was even better in the month of July. He held opponents to one run in three of his four starts in the month. After seeing the Diamondbacks shut out on Sunday, he should be licking his chops.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 3: No (TBD)
Bonus Pick: Cardinals/Yankees NRFI (TBD)
