MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 31
Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Nobody has scored more runs this year than the Nationals, which will make the top of the first a bit of a sweat. However, the pitching staff of the Braves has been solid lately, and we’ll tail it again here. On the bump is Bryce Elder, who has really rounded into form this month. After a brutal June, he posted a 3.60 ERA in July with 15 strikeouts in 15 innings. He’s coming off of one of his best starts, where he held the Orioles to just one earned run over 5.0 innings and fanned eight in the process.
The other added benefit of tailing the Braves pitching on the NRFI is we get to fade their struggling offense. They’ve scored just 14 runs over their last five games – netting them an average of 2.80 runs per game. That’s music to the ears of All-Star pitcher Foster Griffin. Griffin hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a start since May 19th. Additionally, he’s allowed one or less runs in eight of his last nine starts. If the Braves have the capacity to turn their offense around, it likely won’t be at Griffin’s expense.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 31: No (-105)
Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:15 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Rangers are another team who has struggled offensively. They already rank 23rd in the majors in runs per game (4.14), but they’ve been much worse in the last week. In their three-game series with the Rays, they scored just six total runs. That’s not the best form when you have to face Hunter Brown next. Brown is fresh off 7.0 scoreless innings where he struck out seven White Sox and allowed just two hits. That dropped his ERA down to 3.45 and he should be able to drop it further here.
In the bottom of the first, we get an Astros team that is just above average in scoring. As a result, we’re really putting our trust in Nathan Eovaldi. Eovaldi has put together a solid season where he ranks in the top 25 of the league in wins, WHIP and strikeouts. He’s fanned at least eight batters in four of his last five starts. That includes a stellar outing last time against the Mariners, where he went 7.0 with just one run and eight strikeouts. His stuff is good enough that he should be able to navigate the top of the first.
