MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 29

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 12:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Diamondbacks get first hacks in this one, and they are a pretty average team at the plate. However, while they rank amongst the middle of the pack in the bulk of offensive categories, they are down at the bottom in the first inning. In fact, they rank 23rd in the league in first inning scoring. It won’t help to face Jared Jones, who is white-hot at the moment. In his last four starts (21.0 innings), he’s allowed just three earned runs for an ERA of 1.29. He’s also struck out 28 in that span. On that kind of run, I would take him against just about any offense, and definitely against someone who is in the bottom third of first inning scoring.

To close out the NRFI, we’ll have to deal with the bats of Pittsburgh. While they are one of the best teams in the league when it comes to scoring, we’re going to put our faith in Eduardo Rodriguez. The big lefty would be putting up a Cy Young candidate year if it wasn’t for the likes of Jacob Misiorowski. He’s got a 2.64 ERA on the year and slapped the Pirates around back in May. In that start he threw 7.0 innings and allowed just two hits and no runs. He also fanned seven in that game. He may not give us exactly that performance, but he should be able to duplicate the first frame again.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 29: No (-120)

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets (Game 1)

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Braves have some of the best season stats for their offense, which is part of what has them in first place. However, their double digit lead over the Phillies has dwindled and their offensive output lately is to blame. Over the last month, they have not quite been the team that was advertised. They have just eight runs scored over their last three games (2.67 per game) and will have to change that tune against Sean Manaea. Manaea is looking to finish out his third straight month with a sub-4.00 ERA. He’s coming off of one of his better performances when he held a tough Dodgers lineup to just one run over 6.0 innings. As hot as he’s been he should be able to keep the Braves cool.

In the bottom of the first, we have the return of Braves prospect AJ Smith-Shawver. He hasn’t pitched in the majors yet this year, but his stuff in the minors has looked sensational. In Triple-A, he threw 10.2 rehab innings with 12 strikeouts and just two runs. Meanwhile, all of his metrics looked back to where they were during his incredible run last year. When you add in that the Mets are 25th in the league in run scoring and equally as bad in the first inning, Smith-Shawver should have a welcoming return.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 29: No (-115)

Bonus Pick: Yankees/White Sox NRFI (-125)
