MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 22
Cincinnati Reds vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 3:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Reds get the first hacks during Wednesday’s matinee, and they haven’t been great at the plate this season. They rank 23rd in the majors in run scoring with just 4.18 per game. They were also shut out in the first game of this series by George Kirby and a number of relievers. It doesn’t get much easier with Emerson Hancock on the bump for Seattle. He carries a 3.17 ERA into action on Wednesday with a 1.01 WHIP and 94 strikeouts in 99.0 innings pitched.
The bottom of the first will see a lineup that’s actually a bit worse than the Reds. The Mariners are all the way down at 28th in the league in scoring with 4.06 runs per game. It’ll be tough to change that narrative against Brady Singer. While his season-long statistics are not particularly strong, he has been really good lately. In his last three starts (19.1 innings), he’s allowed just five earned runs for a 2.33 ERA. He’s also fanned 17 in that stretch. If that version of Singer shows up, we should be cruising for this NRFI.

Miami Marlins vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST

The nightcap for our NRFI plays features a bit more of the classic pitching matchup that you’d be looking for. Peter Lambert gets the ball first – rocking a 3.03 ERA on the year. His 91 Ks in just 92.0 innings shows he’s got the stuff to get the swing and miss we’ll need. Speaking of swing and miss, Sandy Alcantara has 107 of those on the year. He’s dropped his ERA down to 3.89 and has held opponents to one run in three of his last five starts.
The bats are another reason to like the NRFI here. Miami has fallen down to league average in terms of scoring and are in the bottom third of the league in first inning runs. They lost their first four games coming out of the break with just 13 runs scored (or 3.25 per game). The Astros haven’t been much better, dropping three of four with the only win coming against Miami. They’ve scored just 14 runs in that span (3.50 per game) and were held to two runs in all three losses.
