MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 12

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Red Sox continue to be a gold mine when looking at NRFI spots. There are two main reasons why that is true – the first of those being the young arms. The Red Sox have a young core of pitching that is coming into its own. Amongst the best of those is Payton Tolle, who gets the ball on Sunday. He has a 3.14 ERA and has fanned 80 batters in 80.1 innings. He’ll be aided by the fact that the Mets are only scoring 4.13 runs per game, which puts them in 25th in the majors. They’ve been even worse lately and that should let Tolle cruise.

The second reason that the Red Sox are easy money on the NRFI is due to their hitting. They are one of the five teams in the majors with lower run scoring than the Mets. Additionally, they have the worst first inning run scoring in the majors with just 0.38 first inning runs scored per game. They’ll deal with Zach Thorton on the bump, who is making just his third start of the year. Although we don’t have many stats to go by with him, his last outing was really promising. He went 6.0 innings and allowed just one run against the Phillies. The Red Sox should be another game that lets him boost those numbers.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 12: No (-125)

Cleveland Guardians vs. Miami Marlins

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV

While both the Mets and Red Sox are bad with the bats, the Guardians put them to shame. They are one of just two teams in the majors with less than 4.00 runs per game – the Padres being the other. They also rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning scoring. All of that is bad news with Tyler Phillips toeing the rubber. He has a 3.28 ERA and has allowed two or less runs in three of his last four games. This one should help him extend that streak.

Miami is perhaps the biggest sweat for us on Sunday. They are right around league average when it comes to most offensive metrics. However, they have been brutal at the plate as of late. They’ve scored just 19 runs over the last five games – or 3.8 runs per game. That would put them right in the bottom of the league. That should be music to the ears of Joey Cantillo, who is on a nice run of his own. He has allowed just five total earned runs over his last five games, posting a 1.55 ERA in that span. Facing a slumping Marlins team should make it plenty easy to get out of the first.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 12: No (-125)
