MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 13
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
Playing an NRFI on the Dodgers on the weekend is a tough sell to most, but I have faith in the arm we’ll see out of Chicago. Sean Burke has been three straight starts with two runs or less allowed. If we take a look at just those three starts, he’s rocking a 2.65 ERA and has 19 strikeouts in just 17.0 innings pitched. When you add in that the Dodgers have not scored a first inning run in nine straight games, it’s looking good for Burke to work his way out of the first here.
Speaking of pitchers that are hot, Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets the ball for the Dodgers on Saturday. His top 10 ERA in the majors might be enough to entice you at 2.68, but consider the fact that he’s been even better across his last four starts. In that span, he’s allowed just three earned runs for a 0.99 ERA. He’s also fanned 25 batters in just 27.1 innings. The White Sox are good with the bats, but not good enough to deal with an arm like that early.

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Los Angeles Angels
First Pitch – 10:07 pm EST
Angels Stadium – Anaheim, CA

While we relied on the pitching in our first NRFI selection, we can fade the hitters a bit in this one. Not only is Tampa Bay a league average lineup in terms of run scoring, but they rank 18th in the league in first inning scoring. That’s not a good sign when Jose Soriano is welcoming you to his house. He comes into action on Sunday in the top 20 of ERA, strikeouts and wins. He’s trailed off a bit from the Cy Young candidate start he had to the season, but he should be good enough to give us an empty frame to start.
The Angels are one of the very worst teams in the majors, no matter what metric you care to measure by. Matters won’t be better for them with Griffin Jax toeing the rubber. He’s allowed more than two runs in an appearance just once all year. His May ERA stood at 1.93 and he’s fresh off one of his very best starts of the season. He went 5.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts against Miami last week. Look for him to ride that momentum to an NRFI here.
