MMA Regional Pick of the Week: PFL MENA: Pride of Arabia
PFL MENA Lightweight Fight: Mohammad Fahmi vs Assem Ghanem
Card Start Time: Sunday (5/24), 9:00am EST (Vice TV)
PFL MENA has a pair of tournaments that get underway on Sunday. Both the featherweight and the lightweight divisions start their 8-man gaunlets for the title – each of which has some familiar faces in it. Two of those familiar faces are the source of our favorite bet for the card.
Assem Ghanem showed out in his PFL MENA debut last year. Coming in as a +250 underdog, he took out Hussein Salem in a dominant unanimous decision. He did that with the same skills by which he built his undefeated record – the wrestling and strength. He’s quick to the hips with his attempts and has solid positioning that helps him ride out rounds on top. He also does a fair amount of damage with the ground and pound – helping him win over judges.
He’s got a great matchup here with Mohammad Fahmi, who showed some weaknesses last time out. While he, too, dominated the early wrestling in his fight with Salah Eddine Hamli, he fell apart late. Struggling with the takedowns and his opponent getting up ultimately lead to him getting tired late. Then when his shots turned to despiration, he was submitted.
With the strength of Ghanem and his ability to go toe-to-toe with Fahmi’s wrestling, he should be able to take him into deep waters.
