MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 13
Cleveland Guardians vs. St. Louis Cardinals
First Pitch – 7:45 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
The futility of the early offense is key in this matchup on Monday. Both the Guardians and the Cardinals sit in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning scoring. Both are averaging less than 0.38 first inning runs per game and have scored just once total over each of their last three games. The full game hitting numbers are equally grim for the Guardians – perhaps even more so. They rank 25th in the league with just 3.62 runs per game and were held to just one against the Braves on Sunday.
The pitching of this matchup is not too shabby either. Matthew Liberatore and his 3.38 ERA gets the ball first in this one. He’s held his opponents in two of his last three starts to just one run. He’s largely kept the walks in check is well, which is important for a guy who doesn’t pick up a lot of strikeouts. Closing out the NRFI will be Gavin Williams. Over his last two starts, he’s thrown 12.2 innings and struck out 18 batters. He also only allowed a single run in that span, which came on a Carter Jensen solo home run. With as bad as these offenses have been, I expect these two to be able to get the job done for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 13: No (-145)
Texas Rangers vs. Athletics
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the bottom of the first, we get some more lackluster bats. The Rangers are putting up just 3.93 runs per game, which is good for 22nd in the league. Not only that, but they are also 27th in the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. That shouldn’t get any easier with Luis Severino on the bump. While he got roughed up by a hot Braves lineup, his numbers outside of that game are sharp. He has a sub-4.00 ERA and has 10 Ks in just 10.0 innings. Also, getting the Rangers should help him keep those numbers down as well.
The bottom of the inning isn’t filled with much more offense. While the Athletics are a middle of the pack team in terms of run scoring, nobody is worse than them in the first inning. In fact, they are the only team left in the league that has not scored a first inning run yet. That shouldn’t change with Nathan Eovaldi tossing. After a similarly rough start, he settled in with 6.0 innings with two earned runs and seven strikeouts against Seattle. The Athletics are right around that level and should help keep him rolling.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 13: No (-135)
