MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 4

San Diego Padres vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We rode this NRFI play on Saturday to a victory with neither team doing much of anything until the bottom of the third. There’s no real reason to think the bats should get going here either. Friday’s game dropped the Padres down to just 3.0 runs per game – worst in the league. The win picked the Red Sox up to 3.14 per game, which is good for 28th in the league. Not only are they both terrible at the plate, but neither are scoring early either. Over seven games, both teams have just one first inning run each.

The pitching situation should also help keep this one quiet early on. The Red Sox will send out Connelly Early first. The young lefty looked as advertised in his season debut – tossing 5.1 innings and only allowing one run. He struck out six and looked like one of the sharper parts of this Boston staff. Randy Vasquez was also a force for the Padres in his first start. He went 6.0 scoreless against the Tigers and only allowed two hits with eight strikeouts. With two guys firing on all cylinders and the offenses sputtering, this should be an easy NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 4: No (-125)

Cincinnati Reds vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the nightcap, we’ll be trusting some young arms to get it done. First to the bump with be Kumar Rocker. While he hasn’t quite lived up to what was expected when he left Vanderbilt, it’s clear he has some big stuff. He’s shown flashes over the last two years – striking out 70 in 76.0 innings. Luckily for him, he gets to face a Cincinnati lineup that is also struggling. They, like the Red Sox, are just hanging out at 3.14 runs per game (28th in the league). They are also below average early in the game. Those should help Rocker in his first start on Saturday.

Texas has been a bit sharper at the plate. While they are a bit more active, they’ll have to face a bit more extablished of an arm. Rhett Lowder looked dominant against the Red Sox last time out. He only allowed a 4th inning homer in what would have otherwise been a spotless start. Although the Rangers should bring some more noise, I doubt they will early in the game. They have just two first inning runs over their first seven games. Lowder should be able to close the door on this NRFI for us even if he falls into trouble later.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 4: No (-130)
