MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 11
New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 6:10 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Yankees roll into this one on the heels of a three-game losing streak. The reason for that skid has been less so their arms and more that their bats have been silent. Over the three games, they’ve only managed five total runs (or 1.67 runs per game). That’s dropped them from being near the top of the league in scoring to the edge of the top 10. Now they have another tall task in front of them in Nick Martinez. Over 12.0 innings this year, Martinez has allowed just three runs. More importantly, for our purposes, only one of those runs have come in the first five innings of the game.
The bottom of the first should also be a no-sweat situation. Max Fried is back on the hill for his fourth start of the year. In the previous three starts, he racked up 20.0 innings and just three total earned runs. The three-time All-Star looks like he could plow through just about any offense at this point. He’ll get the Rays, who are roughly middle of the pack in all major hitting categories. They, like the Yankees, have also sputtered recently with just nine runs over the last three games.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 11: No (-145)
Cleveland Guardians vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first, we get another team that is struggling with the bats. Cleveland ranks in the bottom third of the league in both run scoring and first inning run scoring. They’ll try to reverse that course against the veteran lefty Martin Perez. Perez has been a nice stop gap for the Braves, who have a bunch of pitchers on the IL. He’s thrown 9.1 innings this year and allowed just four earned runs. That inlcudes only one run over the first three innings of the games. It may be a bit of a sweat, but I think Perez should be able to get us the first three outs.
The bottom of the inning might be scarier from the hitting perspective, but the arm should ease our nerves. The Braves have been slugging lately – recording three homers and 11 runs on Friday night. That’s put them in the top five of the league in terms of runs per game. However, they’ll need to deal with Parker Messick. Messick has only allowed a single run this year over 11.0 innings. He’s also fanned 11 in the process. Even if the Braves are firing on all cylinders, Messick should be able to bring the heat.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 11: No (-135)
