MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 8
San Diego Padres vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 12:35 pm EST
PNC park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Padres come to the plate first in this one and it’s hard to overstate just how bad their offense has bee. They’re 23rd in the league in runs per game with just 3.45 per game and were again held to one run on Tuesday. Not only have they been bad, but they also have been particularly bad in the first inning. Over the 11 games they have played, they have scored just one first inning run. Now they face Mitch Keller, who has been tough out of the gate. He has allowed just two runs over 12.0 innings – and against far better offenses than this Padres squad.
To close out the NRFI, we’ll lean on the shoulders of Michael King. His strikeout stuff is playing up this year, having picked up 11 Ks in just 10.2 innings. He ran into a touch of trouble last outing against the Red Sox, but has not allowed a run in either the first or second inning all year. Pittsburgh has solid hitting numbers on the short season, but are coming back down to Earth a bit. I would expect that King could aid in that descension.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 8: No (-150)
Kansas City Royals vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
Speaking of teams that are coming back to Earth, the Royals have cooled after a hot start with the bats. They’ve scored just 10 total runs in their last three games combined and seem to be having issues stringing things together. Not only that, they are currently just one of three teams in the majors that has failed to put up a first inning run on the season. Joey Cantillo shouldn’t make that any easier on them. He’s rocking a 3.00 ERA with 11 strikeouts in just 9.0 innings. He’s kept the first frame clean in both of his starts and I expect him to again here.
To close out the second NRFI, we’ve got Cole Ragans on the bump. After a rocky first start against the Braves, he settled right in and held the Twins without an earned run over 6.0 innings. Not only that, but he also fanned eight in that game and limited the walks to one. Now he gets a Cleveland team that is just 2-9 when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They are one of just two teams that hasn’t cleared the 3.00 mark when it comes to runs per game. Ragans should feast on that and help us go perfect for the second day straight.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 8: No (-150)
