San Diego Padres vs. Boston Red Sox

Fenway Park – Boston, MA

We’ve rode this series to a pair of NRFIs and there is no reason to stop now. These two teams continue to have some of the worst hitting in the league. There are just four teams who are at 3.00 runs per game or lower in all of MLB. Two of them are in this game. Not only have they been bad across the whole game, but the first inning has been a real struggle for them. Over an eight-game beginning to the season, each team has scored just one first inning run. When looking at NRFIs, you have to ride offenses that are this weak.
In addition to fading the bats, I like the pitching matchup as well. While both Ranger Suarez and Walker Buehler had rough first starts this season, both have reasons to be confident here. For Suarez, he was lights out last year. Over 157.1 innings, he maintained a 3.20 ERA with 151 strikeouts. Buehler’s reason for confidence is revenge. After starting with the Red Sox last year, they cut him loose in August – effectively giving up on him. He pitched well after leaving – only allowing one run over 13.2 innings with the Phillies. Give him a chance to shut down the Red Sox’s putrid offense and I like those chances.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 5: No (-110)
Cincinnati Reds vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 2:35 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
We went with this series on Saturday as well and it wasn’t fruitful, but it actually seems like an even better spot on Sunday. In the top half of the first Jack Leiter is on the bump. While his Vanderbilt teammate Kumar Rocker couldn’t give us a scoreless first, he did give us four consecutive scoreless innings afterwards. Leiter gave us 6.0 innings with just two earned in his season debut. He put up eight strikeouts as well. Given that Rocker largely held them in place, Leiter should have no problems.
While the Rangers did good limiting the Reds on Saturday, they couldn’t manage any runs for themselves. They now haven’t scored in 11 straight innings. Already that’s enough of a reason to like the NRFI here. One more reason to add to it is Chase Burns. Burns went 5.0 scoreless to open the year with seven strikeouts. There’s a good chance he follows his teammate Rhett Lowder with a similar performance.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 5: No (-150)
