Across more than 90 years of competition, thousands of World Cup goals have been scored, but only a small number have arrived in the opening seconds of a match.
With the 2026 tournament expanding to 48 teams and more matches than ever before, there will be plenty of opportunities for someone to score straight after kick-off, and you can follow every moment with goalscorer and match odds available throughout the competition.
Let’s take a look at the fastest goal scorers throughout the tournament’s history.
Clint Dempsey, 2014 – 29 seconds
At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Clint Dempsey scored after 29 seconds for the United States in a group stage match against Ghana. Assisted by Jermaine Jones following a quick attacking move straight from kick off, Dempsey drove into the penalty area and finished low with his left foot to give his side an early lead. It was the fastest goal ever scored by the United States at a World Cup, and the USA went on to win the game 2-1.
The United States progressed from the group stage in a difficult group that also included Germany and Portugal, but they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Belgium after extra time. Dempsey’s goal remains one of the defining moments of their tournament.
Bryan Robson, 1982 – 27 seconds
At the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Bryan Robson scored after 27 seconds in a group stage match against France. He reacted quickly to Terry Butcher’s assist inside the penalty area to give England the lead, finishing from close range after a loose ball fell kindly for him.
England won 3-1 and advanced past the first group stage, but were eliminated in the second group stage after drawing both matches in that phase and did not reach the semi-finals.
Ernest Lehner, 1934 – 25 seconds
Ernest Lehner of Germany scored after 25 seconds against Austria in the third-place play-off at the 1934 World Cup in Italy. The goal came during only the second edition of the World Cup, at a time when the tournament format was straight knockout from the start.
Germany went on to win that match 3 2 and finished the tournament in third place. Lehner’s strike stood for many years as one of the quickest goals ever recorded on football’s biggest stage.
Vaclav Masek, 1962 – 15 seconds
Vaclav Masek scored after around 15 seconds for Czechoslovakia against Mexico in a group stage match at the 1962 World Cup in Chile. His goal immediately put pressure on Mexico and helped set up a controlled performance from Czechoslovakia, who won the match 3-1.
Czechoslovakia went on to reach the final, where they lost to Brazil, finishing as runners-up. Masek’s record stood for forty years before it was eventually broken.
Hakan Sukur, 2002 – 11 seconds
The fastest goal in World Cup history was scored by Hakan Sukur of Turkey in 2002. He found the net after just 11 seconds in the third-place play-off match against South Korea at the World Cup hosted by South Korea and Japan, capitalising on a defensive error almost immediately after kick-off.
Turkey won the match 3 2 and finished third overall, which remains the best result in their history. Sukur’s 11-second strike is still officially recognised by FIFA as the fastest goal ever scored in a men’s World Cup finals tournament.
