Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC Mexico City
UFC Middleweight Fight: Wes Schultz vs Damian Pinas
Start Time: Saturday (2/28) 5:00pm EST (Paramount+)
The curtian-jerker of the evening gives us a pair of fighters who bring the action. Firstly, Wes “Party Time” Schultz comes with a lot of energy and non-stop offense. On the other side, Damian Pinas is a sniper riding a four-fight knockout streak. The clash of styles is bound to be fun and gives us a solid betting spot to open the card.
While the line does seem a bit wide at first, I think there is still a lot of value on the favorite here. Pinas is a the type of fighter who understands that everybody is coming to take him down. As a result, he keeps distance well with his footwork and by pumping the jab out with regularity. In addition to that, he has some sneaky submission skills that pop up when someone does get on the inside against him.
Schultz is an exciting wrestler, who comes forward at a solid clip. However, an issue he’s had in the past has been his ability to close the distance with his strikes. Because he is less comfortable on the feet, he can sometimes run into issues getting back inside and can get picked apart. With Pinas being the type of sniper that he is, he should be able to find a moment to pick apart Schultz. It doesn’t take a lot of those shots to end the night, so look for Pinas to get in and out quickly.
