MMA Regional Pick of the Week: Fury FC 116
Fury FC Featherweight Fight: Justice Torres vs Carlos Calderon
Card Start Time: Friday (2/20), 6:00pm EST (UFC Fight Pass)
The co-main event of this Friday’s fight card is one featuring a pair of fighters who got a chance on Dana White’s Contender Series – both on short notice. While neither were successful, it does bring a lot of attention to this fight card in Texas that occurs just the day before the UFC comes to town.
In this fight, I’m going with the underdog. Calderon has shown a lot more skills in his fights prior to, and after, his shot on the big stage. The most notable among them is his ability to take the fight to the mat. In his fight with Alberto Montes, he got the Venezuelan fighter down twice early and controlled him for nearly three minutes. However, the short notice aspect of the fight left him tired and got him submitted on the next attempt. With a full camp under his belt, I expect the latter half of that to be less of an issue.
On the other side of things, Torres has regularly had issues with takedown defense. If you look at his regional fights with Cameron Graves or Pena Allamov, you’ll see him conceding positions a bit too often. I expect Calderon to take advantage of that and ride it to a decision here.
