Champions League Markets on Kalshi – January 31st
Bodoe/Glimt vs Inter
One of the beauties of the Kalshi Prediction Market is that you can buy low on positions. There is not much better of a buy low position than Inter Milan’s chance to win in the first leg of the knockout phase.
One of the reasons people are not higher on Inter right now is that their last four results during the league phase was nothing to write home about. They posted a 1-0-3 line and lost their spot in the round of 16 as a result. However, it’s important to contextualize that each of the three losses were to teams who finished in the top 14 of the table. Plus, they closed with a big win over Dortmund thanks to a late goal from Federico Dimarco.
On the other side of things, the stock is as high as ever on Bodo Glimt. Back-to-back wins over Atlético Madrid and Manchester City have people hyped on the Norwegian side. It’s important to remember that those wins were their only two of the whole tournament and neither team really had much to play for. As a result, I think you see them come back to Earth here and Inter Milan is the right squad to do that to them.
Dortmund vs Atalanta
Another buy low spot in this market is the line on Dortmund scoring a victory over Atalanta. Dortmund closed the end of the league phase in ugly fashion. They dropped back to back fixtures with the aforementioned Inter Milan and Tottenham. While it’s never good to enter the knockout phase on that kind of run, those two losses are certainly excusable.
Additionally, when you look at how good they’ve been in the Bundesliga, you have to respect it. They’ve scored three goals in each of their last four matches. They’ve posted four wins and a draw over their last five, and have rode those results to the second spot in the table.
While people are selling on Dortmund because of some bad results, they seem to be overlooking how bad Atalanta has been lately. They lost their last two games of the league phase as well, but to much worse teams – Union Saint-Gilloise and Athletic Bilbao. They’re also just two weeks removed from a draw with Pisa, who seems poised for relegation from Italian Serie A.
Champions League Winner
Picking a Champions League winner at this stage might be a big ask. Not only do we not know half of the round of 16 teams yet, but we also don’t know who the knockout phase teams are poised to play either. As a result, I’m looking for teams in this table that show a real chance of increasing in value – that way we might find ourselves in a solid sell off position.
Of those teams, Tottenham might be one of the best looks. Trading at just $0.03 right now, they seem poised for an easy path to the quarterfinals. While we wait to see if they get the #3 or #4 seed, we can look to the four teams that they could potentially run into in the round of 16. Galatasaray, Juventus, Club Brugge, Atlético Madrid – none of them looked like world beaters in the league phase. Plus, they avoid the chance of running into Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle or Real Madrid.
Additionally, while this might be a great sell off spot after just a couple matches, I do actually like Tottenham’s chances. While they have faltered a bit in the Premier League, they swept their last three Champions League matches. Furthermore, they didn’t conceed a goal in any of those.
