College Football Playoff National Championship Game Predictions & Best Bets
#10 Miami Hurricanes vs #1 Indiana Hoosiers
Start Time: Monday – 7:30 PM EST
The Cinderella mentioned above, the Miami Hurricanes, picked the perfect year to make a magical run through the college football playoffs. While the national championship game is technically a neutral site game, that neutral site just so happens to be the Hurricanes’ home field at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, where they went 7-1 for the season. But can they finish the job on Monday night?
They’ll be facing a juggernaut in the 15-0, #1-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. After starting the season ranked #20, the Hoosiers have proceeded to annihilate every team that has dared to line up across from them this season. Only three teams have even made it within a touchdown of Indiana on the scoreboard when the final whistle has blown. And the Hoosiers just got done stomping #5-ranked Oregon by 34 points in the national semifinal game at the Peach Bowl.
The nation’s second-best offense paired with the nation’s second-best defense makes Indiana next to impossible to beat (considering they are undefeated, I guess you can take out the ‘next to’ part of that statement). So I’m not going out on much of a limb saying that I’m picking the Indiana Hoosiers to win the national championship on Monday night.
However, the game should be extremely close, at least according to my number crunching. If we’re pretending it’s a neutral site game on Monday, my line is Indiana -4.5. If we’re treating it like what it really is – a home game for the Miami Hurricanes – that line drops to the smallest of margins: Indiana -1. So while Indiana is my choice to win, the Miami Hurricanes are my play on the spread.
We may as well make a play on the total as well and complete the trifecta. Despite both being among the best defensive teams in the nation, the Hoosiers and the Hurricanes both played in high-scoring affairs in their respective semifinal games. After crunching all the numbers, I have this game ending in the 50-point range, so let’s hope the Over hits.
