While the UFC continues to be the king when it comes to MMA and gambling, there is more MMA than ever to bet on now. Promotions all over the world as well as domestic ones are showing up in sportsbooks. The advantage here is that the data is usually quite a bit less sharp than when you’re making MMA predictions for the UFC. MMA Regional Pick of the Week: Oktagon 81
Oktagon Heavyweight Fight: Martin Buday vs Will Fleury
Card Start Time: Sunday (12/28), 12:00pm EST (oktagon.tv)
For our regional pick of this week, we’re heading to one of my personal favorite promotions – Oktagon. They’re putting on another big card to close out the year with two title fights at the top. One of those title fights just so happens to be the best value on the card.
Will Fleury comes into Sunday’s action as Oktagon’s double champ – holding both the heavyweight and light heavyweight belt. Since coming to Oktagon, he’s breezed through most of the high quality competition he’s faced. Most importantly, he’s done so with a mixture of big power and above average cardio. That should come into play as he faces his toughest test yet.
Standing across from him is UFC-veteran Martin Buday – who went 6-1 in the world’s biggest promotion before getting released anyways. Many theorize that was due to his less than exciting style, which revolves around wearing down his opponents with pressure against the cage. Unfortunately for Buday, Fleury deals with this style well. Additionally, the judges in Europe seem even more focused on damage over control than those in the United States.
For those reason, I’m shocked that Fleury is coming in as an underdog. However, I’ll happily take that plus-money in this one.
