College Basketball Preview, Picks, and Best Bets for December 14

Matt Dewoskin ATS College Basketball Picks Record (Est 11/3/2025)

All Selections: 73-48-2
Perfect 3-0 Cards: 9-32

Merrimack at Vermont

Start Time: 2:00 PM EST

Merrimack enters this game with a 6-6 overall record and a 2-4 record on the road. The Warriors are 6-6 against the spread, but 3-3 ATS on the road.

Vermont comes into this matchup with a 6-5 overall record and a 2-1 record at home. The Catamounts are 4-5 ATS and 1-0 at home ATS.

Vermont is also entering this game off a win at Pepperdine, but the Catamounts dropped their most recent home game. They lost to Yale by three on November 30th.

Merrimack comes into this game having won four in a row. Their most recent win was at Princeton. They beat the Tigers by three at Princeton.

Neither of these teams is particularly good on the defensive end. Merrimack slows down the pace to limit possessions. This way, their poor defense doesn’t have to defend as many possessions. Vermont actually plays slower than you would think, but they also have an incredibly efficient offense. Merrimack is only slightly better at scoring than they are at defending.

Merrimack is also a really poor rebounding team. Vermont isn’t especially awesome at cleaning the glass, but the Catamounts can pull down boards.

Vermont has the clearly better offense, and they get to defend their home floor after losing their most recent home game. Merrimack is prone to scoring droughts, and they’ll struggle with Vermont’s pace. The 5.5 points are a bit scary to lay, but on a short Sunday schedule, let’s lay the points with the Catamounts playing in their building.

Best Bet: Vermont -5.5

Indiana State at Milwaukee

Start Time: 2:00 PM EST

Indiana State enters this matchup with a 6-4 overall record and a 1-3 record on the road. The Sycamores are 5-3 ATS and 2-2 ATS on the road.

Milwaukee comes into this game with a 4-5 overall record and a 4-0 home record. The Panthers are 2-6 ATS and 1-2 ATS at home.

We’ve got a bit of a clash in styles in this matchup. Indiana State is solid defensively, but suspect offensively. The Panthers have been good on the offensive end, but struggle to defend. However, both teams play at pace.

Indiana State has a road win at SIUE, but got drilled by Duke and lost by two to Louisiana Tech on the road. Milwaukee just beat Robert Morris in a conference game in Milwaukee.

Indiana State doesn’t rely on three-point shooting, but they can make free throws, and they can avoid turnovers. They’ll also make life difficult for a Milwaukee offense that isn’t especially efficient. Let’s lock up the Sycamores at +4.5 points, and sprinkle the moneyline.

Best Bet: Indiana State +4.5

High Point at Appalachian State

Start Time: 2:00 PM EST

This game will be played at the Tarlton Center in Hickory, NC as an event called the Hickory Hoops Classic. Both schools are about an hour away from Hickory.

High Point comes into this game with an 8-2 overall record and a 4-5 record ATS.

Appalachian State enters this matchup with a 6-5 overall record and a 5-4 record ATS.

This is High Point’s fourth neutral site game. The Panthers opened the season at the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon and went to the Boardwalk Battle in Daytona Beach. They’ve won five of their last six. High Point’s best win is still their opening day win over Furman. They have a lower division program next on their schedule, so there’s no look-ahead.

Appalachian State has been a bit of a mess this year. The Mountaineers are coming off a win at East Carolina, but they’ve struggled with most mid- or high-major programs. They also have the start of Sun Belt Conference play on deck.

High Point has a solid offense, but they can switch off on defense at times. Appalachian State can’t really score, and they try to slow the pace to avoid getting exposed on defense. If High Point makes the Mountaineers play up-tempo, this will turn into a boat race. Appalachian State is a poor shooting team, and that will be their undoing. Let’s lock up High Point to win and cover the 11.5 points in the Hickory Hoops Classic.

Best Bet: High Point -11.5
