Vermont at Buffalo
Start Time: 6:30 PM EST
Vermont comes into Buffalo looking like the America East wagon that we’ve gotten used to. The Catamounts are 4-0 with road wins at Brown and a solid Northeastern team. They also have a pair of home wins over a DII school and a DIII school.
Buffalo also enters this game at 4-0. Buffalo has beaten Southern Miss, Green Bay, and a DIII school at home. The Bulls also have a road win at DePaul.
These two teams played last year in Vermont. The Catamounts won by 11 at home.
Vermont has traveled within the region and won, so going on the road isn’t an issue for the Catamounts. They also come into this one with a top-150 offense in the country. The concern for Buffalo? They don’t really guard anyone, and the Catamounts have guys who can make shots. Vermont doesn’t have much size, but they’re unlikely to get overwhelmed by the Bulls. Most of the bigs on Buffalo are younger or play limited minutes or both. This is likely a one- or two-possession game. Let’s roll with the better roster that has a track record on the road to get the job done. Lock up the Catamounts to win and cover the 2.5 points.
Best Bet: Vermont -2.5
UT-Martin at Florida State
Start Time: 7:00 PM EST
UT-Martin can’t do it a third time, can they? The Skyhawks have won outright as a double-digit dog twice this year. First, they beat UNLV in Las Vegas on opening night. Then, they went to Peoria and racked up a double-digit win against Bradley.
Florida State is off a close, chippy game with the defending national champions and their in-state rivals, the Florida Gators. The Seminoles have matchups with Georgia Southern and Cal State-Bakersfield before the Tampa MTE.
UT-Martin assembled a diverse group of mostly international players in the off-season. The Skyhawks were a true mystery team, but they’ve come out and hung with a pair of capable mid-majors on the road. Can they pick off a heavyweight on the road next? Let’s take UT-Martin to stay within the 22.5 points instead of looking for a money line play. The Skyhawks stay within their system, and we’ve yet to see them get truly outclassed by an opponent. They can do enough on offense and pester the Seminoles on defense to stay within the number.
Best Bet: UT-Martin +22.5
Old Dominion at Xavier
Start Time: 7:00 PM EST
The books have clearly yet to catch on that this version of Xavier is a bit of a mess. The Musketeers come into this matchup at 2-2. They barely got past Marist and Le Moyne before dropping two straight to Santa Clara and Iowa.
Old Dominion is also 2-2. They have a pair of home wins against a DIII program and Norfolk State. They lost on the road at Miami (OH) and at George Washington.
Xavier is capable on the defensive end, but their offense is ugly at the moment. They only managed to get over 70 points against Le Moyne.
On paper, Old Dominion has a roster that should finish in the upper half of the Sun Belt, if not the top four. Guard Robert Davis, Jr. was named the pre-season Sun Belt Player of the Year, and he’s yet to truly break out. Is a breakout loading? Probably not against Xavier, but he’s not going to get shut out of the box score. The Monarchs have a solid back court and enough beef up front to make it difficult on the Musketeers. Lock up the Old Dominion to stay within the number against a Xavier team that has stumbled out of the gate.
Best Bet: Old Dominion +10.5
