The Washington Commanders’ offense will be seriously undermanned on Sunday when the team faces the Atlanta Falcons in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Commanders’ quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Terry McLaurin have been ruled out by the team for Week 4 due to injuries.
There was still hope that Daniels would return this weekend after missing his first-ever NFL game last week due to a sprained left knee, but the bad news for Washington and its fans came down today. And it got worse. Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin will be joining Daniels on the sidelines as he has an injured right quad. That will snap a 72-game playing streak for McLaurin, who last missed a game in 2020.
“When you have two guys that have been reliable, made a lot of plays in this league,” Washington’s offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury told reporters, “you’ve got to find other ways to get guys touches and move the football any way you can.
“It’s just always about maximizing your personnel. It doesn’t matter who’s up, who’s down,” Kinsgbury continued. “As a playcaller, you’ve got to be able to adjust and maximize the guys you have and what do they do best and put them in those positions to be successful. Our staff takes a lot of pride in that.”
“I’ve always had a belief,” Mariota said. “It was just hoping for the opportunity. I never loved the circumstance where I have to come in and play, but I was grateful for it and thankful to play.”
Degenerate Spin: If you have Daniels on your fantasy team, grabbing Mariota to fill in this week is not a bad move. On the gambling front, I only had Washington calculated as a two-point favorite on Sunday, and now that Daniels and McLaurin are out, they’ve moved from a 1.5-point favorite to a 2.5-point dog at the books.
