Niners DE Nick Bosa Out for Season With Torn ACL

It seems like every day there’s a new season-ending injury in the NFL to report. But pro football isn’t a game of tiddlywinks, as the expression goes. Today’s season-ending injury is to the San Francisco 49ers’ Nick Bosa.

Bosa, a five-time Pro Bowler and the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, has torn his ACL for a third time. With so much experience with the injury, the 27-year-old diagnosed himself even before the tests came back with the expected result.

“He was pretty confident that he did it,” San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters today. “You could tell walking on the field, seeing his face, and could tell talking to him last night just how sure he was of it, and knowing his body, and then an MRI confirmed it this morning.”

But it wasn’t completely bad news for the defensive stalwart – he didn’t damage anything else other than the ACL in his right knee.

“I was told it’s as clean as it gets,” Shanahan explained. “In terms of if you have an ACL, I was told that’s the kind that you want.”

Nonetheless, season-ending surgery is on deck for Bosa.

“He had a pretty good idea of what we were going to find out today, but obviously, he is bummed out,” Shanahan reported. “Nick can handle anything, and he’s going to handle it like he always does, which will be great. But obviously, he was bummed out from not being able to finish out this year and especially how good of a year he was having so far.”

No one has had as many quarterback hits (142) since 2021 as Bosa, so this is going to leave a huge hole in the Niners’ defense.

Degenerate Spin: This is turning into a lost season for the Niners, with Bosa out for the year and quarterback Brock Purdy still questionable after getting injured in Week 1. Yet, San Fran is still 3-0. And they’re favored by 3.5 points hosting Jacksonville this coming Sunday. Despite the injuries, I like the 49ers to cover. So maybe scratch what I said about a lost season, as they may be 4-0 before we know it.
