MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 23
Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
We played this game on Monday and it bit us. Both teams managed to hit a dinger in the first inning, and left us with a bog miss. However, the offenses of these two teams still read NRFI to me. The Braves are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. Meanwhile, the Nationals had scored just 12 runs in their last five games entering Monday (and had put up just one in the first three innings in that game at time of publication). Additionally, Washington ranks in the bottom third of the league in run scoring overall.
In addition to having some bats that haven’t been great this year, we also have a solid pitching matchup. The Braves will throw Hurston Waldrep, who is rocking a 3.04 ERA on the year. He’s 5-1 and has allowed more than three earned runs just once all season. On the other side, the Nationals will go with Brad Lord. He’s posted a 3.18 ERA over his last three games and recently held the Braves scoreless for the first five innings – before ultimately falling apart in the sixth. Both of those guys should be able to get us three quick outs.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 23: No (+100)
Minnesota Twins vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
Minnesota is mathematically eliminated from the postseason. A big part of that reason has been their bats. They rank in the bottom third of the majors in run scoring and have been far worse in the first inning. They rank 28th in the majors in that category. Now they’ll have to deal with Patrick Corbin. He has had an up and down year in 2025, but he seems to have settled in lately. He’s held his opponents to one run or less in three of his last four starts. That includes 4.1 scoreless innings against the Mets in his last go-round. A game with the Twins should look like child’s play compared to that one.
In the bottom of the inning, we get Zebby Matthews, who has had a rough go of it lately. The Angels and the Yankees have both got to him for a bunch of runs recently. When he is on, he has shown signs of brilliance. Facing the Rangers might help that come out again. They rank 25th in the league in first inning scoring. They’re in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring across the whole game as well.
