Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC Perth
UFC Strawweight Fight: Loma Lookboonme vs Alexia Thainara
Start Time: Saturday (9/27) 7:00pm EST (ESPN+)
I’ve always been a big fan of Loma Lookboonme – before and since her UFC career began. In fact, she’s part of my regular argument for why there ought to be a UFC atomweight division. It’s exactly that fact that makes me like the opposite side of this fight though.
Alexia Thainara is such a physical fighter. We saw it in the fight that got her into the UFC on Dana White’s Contender Series. Then we saw her manhandle a former flyweight in Molly McCann in her first fight in the UFC. She’s great at closing the distance and great at keeping her opponent down. Plus, she knows how to put the pressure and volume on people.
Although I’m impressed with Lookboonme, she really should be in a lower weight class. She’s an adept striker and has solid clinch work, but I can’t imagine her keeping that up against someone like Thainara. Expect the Brazilian to control the fight and take this one home.
