A furious fourth-quarter comeback allowed the Los Angeles Chargers to edge past the visiting Denver Broncos on Sunday, 23-20, pushing the Chargers to 3-0 on the season. But it was a costly win for the home team, as Pro Bowl running back Najee Harris collapsed to the field in the second quarter with a non-contact injury and was carted off.
While it’s not yet confirmed, some reporters have stated that Harris tore his Achilles, which would end his first season with the Chargers basically before it even began, with nine carries and 33 yards total for the year.
This from a player who has rushed for 1000+ yards in all four seasons he’s been in the NFL, averaging seven rushing touchdowns per year, all with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And a player who has never missed a game over those four years.
Harris and the Chargers have been a snakebitten marriage ever since the 27-year-old signed with the team in the offseason. After suffering an eye injury when a firework went off in his face on the 4th of July, Harris missed all of Los Angeles’s preseason games and was in the process of having his workload gradually ramped up in the regular season. Ironically, it was his durability and physicality that made him an attractive offseason addition for the Chargers.
Degenerate Spin: While it’s never nice to celebrate a player getting hurt, fantasy team owners who have rookie running back Omarion Hampton on their roster can rejoice. Hampton is the next man up with Harris out, and he responded today with 129 yards and a touchdown for the Chargers. Maybe L.A. will be ok in Harris’s absence.
