MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 19

Cleveland Guardians vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Guardians helped up cash on Thursday and we’ll look to them for some help again on Friday. Their bats will be the first bit of help. They haven’t been all that great lately. Despite being on a huge winning streak, they have put up just 20 runs in their last five games combined (4.00 per game). That’s par for the course – they rank 27th in runs scored in the majors and are one of four teams under 4.00 per game on the season. Now they’ll face Pablo Lopez, who has looked lights out since returning from injury. In the 11.0 innings since he’s come back, he has allowed just two earned runs total.

The bottom of the inning will see us get even more help from the Guardians. This time it will come in the form of one of their breakout arms. Parker Messick has been nasty for them since breaking into the majors. He has a 1.84 ERA on the year and has allowed one run or fewer in four of the five starts he’s made in his career. Add in that Minnesota ranks 28th in the majors in first inning scoring and we should get through these first six outs without breaking much of a sweat.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 19: No (-120)

Seattle Mariners vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

The big arms come out in Texas on Friday with the Mariners coming to town. Hunter Brown will be the first that we see and his 2.27 ERA is enough to give anyone faith in an NRFI play. July 20th was the last time he gave up more than two runs in a start, and in that span he has five with one or less. The Mariners have been a below average team when it comes to scoring in the first inning. With those two things in mind, I don’t expect a scary top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the first, we actually get a team that is far worse in the first inning. The Astros currently rank 27th in first inning scoring and are in the bottom third of the league in scoring overall. Those two things should help a starter who likely needs no help. Bryan Woo gets the ball for Seattle to kick off this series. His ERA is just a whisper over 3.00 and his strikeout numbers have skyrocketed in the last couple starts. Both of those things let me know he’s firing on all cylinder and with the AL West on the line, he should be dialed in.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 19: No (-140)
