MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 18

Cleveland Guardians vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comesky Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

Although they are inching towards a playoff berth, the Guardians have been miserable at the plate this year. They rank 25th in the majors in first inning scoring. Additionally, they are one of just four teams in the majors to be under 4.00 runs per game. Now all they’ll have to do to change their tune in this one is hit off of the reigning AL Cy Young winner. Tarik Skubal comes into the game with a 2.26 ERA. He’s held his opponents to one or less runs in four of his last five starts. If someone is out to buck that trend, it won’t be the Guardians.

The Tigers are a set of bats that we have to worry about quite a bit more in terms of the NRFI. They rank at or around the top ten in most of the major offensive metrics. As a result, we’ll be relying on the Guardians’ Tanner Bibee to keep things in check – at least for an inning. He’s coming off of his best outing of the year.  In that game, he pitched a complete game shutout against the White Sox, holding them to just two hits in the process. When you add in the fact that the Tigers have slowed lately – putting up just 13 runs in their last five games – it seems like a task that Bibee should be up to.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 18: No (-145)

Athletics vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game will kick off with Brayan Bello toeing the rubber. While he’s stumbled a bit as of late, he is still posting a 3.25 ERA heading into Thursday, which is more than respectable. The Red Sox kept them quiet early on Wednesday. They put up an empty first frame and only allowing one run over the first four innings of the game. While the Athletics are usually pretty solid early in the game, I like Bello’s chances to keep this quiet for just three outs.

In the bottom of the inning, we see the Red Sox at the plate. They have stuggled to put up runs lately. The Red Sox have scored just 20 runs over their last six games (or 3.33 per game in that span). Now they’ll need to deal with J.T. Ginn, who has been solid as of late. Over his last two games (9.1 innings), he’s only allowed a single earned run. He’s also held his opponents to three or fewer runs in four of his last five starts. She should be able to do that here with the icy cold Red Sox.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 18: No (-105)
