MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 17
Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
I’m loving the NRFI in the nation’s capital on Wednesday. The Braves and the Nationals couldn’t hit off of a tee for the better part of the game on Tuesday. They entered the 10th inning deadlocked at 0-0 and only when the pinch hitters came in did the Braves break the tie. Now some of that was due to solid pitching performance from both of the starters. However, it’s not like these teams have been setting the world on fire with their bats. The Braves rank 24th in the majors when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They’re also giving plenty of their starters days off. The Nationals rank 25th in run scoring this year and have been even worse as of late.
In addition to the dead bats for either team, we also have a stellar pitching matchup. The Braves send out Hurston Waldrep, who has held teams to two runs or less in four of his five starts. Brad Lord will be opposite him on the bump. While his season-long stats may not wow the crowd, his last few games have looked stellar. Over his last two games (11.2 innings), he’s held opponents to just four total earned runs. That’s a 3.09 ERA in that stretch and against teams hitting far better than the Braves currently are.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 17: No (-110)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Geogre M. Steinbrenner Field – Tampa, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game will see some teams that might be hitting better than in our first selection. The Blue Jays get first rips and they are certainly in a much better place than the Braves or the Nationals. However, while they have put up plenty of runs this year, they have not been great in the first inning – where they are a below average team. Additionally, they’ll have to face Ian Seymour, who has been sharp for the Rays. He has not allowed more than two runs in a game in four straight and he’s rocking a 3.16 ERA to show for it. I’ll take my chances with the big bats of the Blue Jays with Seymour looking for three outs.
The bottom of the inning is back to the slow bats. The Rays have been struggling at the plate, scoring just nine runs over their last three games combined. That’s going to get even worse for them with Kevin Gausman toeing the rubber. The Blue Jays starter has allowed one run or less in three straight games and should be looking at a fourth here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 17: No (-125)
