The Washington Commanders’ loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football last week cost them more than their undefeated record for the season. Their star quarterback, Jayden Daniels, reportedly injured his left knee in the loss, and his status for this coming Sunday’s action is up in the air.
Apparently, ’tis the season for franchise quarterbacks to get injured, as just yesterday I wrote about Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow’s turf toe injury, which will be operated on, costing him the majority of this season. And while it doesn’t seem as serious (the MRI showed no serious damage), Daniels has some undisclosed injury to his left knee. The injury occurred at the start of the fourth quarter on Thursday, when Packers’ Javon Bullard hit him in the knee with his helmet.
“It starts off first on the strength, the movements,” Washington head coach Dan Quinn said about Daniels possibly playing on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders. “Then on the field change direction, the pivoting, the moving, all of those would be the things to go. So, we’ll just take it as it goes through the week, but he’d have to see all of the steps along this week to hit those marks. The speed, the stopping, the change of direction, all of it.”
“We’ll take it all the way to Friday,” Quinn continued, “and then have a good idea of where we’re at. … This is an elite competitor. Our confidence in him is through the roof.”
The sophomore quarterback has yet to miss an NFL game, so he’s got that going for him. If he is unable to play, Marcus Mariota is next on the depth chart for the Commanders.
Degenerate Spin: Washington is currently a 2.5-point favorite at home over Las Vegas. If Daniels were playing, I’d line the Commanders up as a 14.5-point favorite, so this may be a line you want to get in on, whether he plays or not.
