MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 15
Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the opening game of the week, Braxton Ashcraft will be on the bump for the Pirates. While he has oscillated between starting and relief work, he has been quite good as of late. In five straight appearances, he has allowed a run or fewer to his opponents. That has helped to lower his season ERA to 2.47 with 56 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. He’ll face the Cubs in this one, who just had a bit of a down series against the Rays. Their offense only found 14 runs in a three-game set, which is under their season average. They also have just been a middle of the pack team in the first inning, which gives me the confidence that Ashcraft can get it done.
Speaking of teams with cold bats, they might not get any colder than the Pirates right now. They have scored 24 runs in their last nine games (which comes out to 2.67 runs per game). In that span, they have managed to lose eight of those nine games. There’s no reason to believe that facing Jameson Taillon should help matters. He’s allowed just six runs over his last four starts, which comes out to a 2.70 ERA in that stretch. The Pirates should help him improve those numbers even further as we cash this NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 15: No (-125)
Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
The second of our first inning plays comes from the all-Texas matchup on Monday. The Rangers roll into Houston with an offense that just isn’t getting it done. They rank 18th in runs scored, but are far worse in the first inning – where they rank 23rd. Jason Alexander is going to help those numbers sink ever lower. He’s coming off his best start of the year. He went 7.0 scoreless against a tough Blue Jays lineup. Furthermore, he only allowed three hits in that contest and walked just one. If that version shows up, the Rangers won’t stand a chance – in the first inning or beyond.
The bottom of the inning sees the Astros looking to spoil our empty first frame. They have not been great at doing that this year as they currently rank 27th in first inning scoring. Now they’ll look to right the ship against Jack Leiter. Leiter’s 3.81 ERA is not likely going to get anyone too excited, but his recent run will. He hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a start since the middle of June. Additionally, he carried a 2.76 ERA through the month of August. He should be able to keep the momentum churning for three more outs for us.
