Dana White’s Contender Series Week 6 – Predictions & Best Bets

Hecher Sosa (+148) vs. Mackson Lee

Last week on the Contender Series, we hit an underdog in Steven Asplund in the main event. Then Asplund cut a less than conventional promo with Laura Sanko, but that’s not the point. The point is that we’re going with another main event underdog. While the height discrepancy is definitely a worry – and is undoubtedly fueling this line – Sosa is so much faster. I think he’ll get inside a work the body of Lee en route to a victory.

Iwo Baraniewski (+200) vs. Mahamed Aly

Another underdog I’m digging for Tuesday is Baraniewski. Aly was a jiu jitsu practitioner who made the switch over and has since been knocking people out with head kicks. While it’s awesome that he’s found a way to get his striking going, I think a lot of the success is due to the level of his opponents. Baraniewski is much more technical and thows a smart one-two combo. I also think he has the wrestling to avoid the ground is Aly changes his tune.

Adam Livingston (+125) vs. Thomas Gantt

Livingston opened this fight as a -150 favorite, which is about where I think the line ought to be. The wrestling of Gantt, who wrestled at NC State, I don’t think it’s enough to consistently keep Livingston down. On the feet, Livingston is head and shoulders better than Gantt. His strikes are more fundemental and much more dangerous. As the fight gets closer, I might take a look at the knockout prop on this one too.

Paddy McCorry (-220) vs. In Su Hwang

In Su Hwang is insanely fun to watch. He throws really big and sharp, but the majority of what he throws are counters. He often keeps his hands down while looking to goad his opponents into going for it. However, he doesn’t like when fighters instead try to get in his face and fight in a phone booth. That’s precisely what McCorry is good at and even won his last fight doing. When you add in a solid ground game and the ability to use his size here, McCorry seems like the play.

Raphael Uchegbu (-148) vs. Cody Chovancek

Speaking of reach, I love the way that Uchegbu uses his length when he fights. His footwork compliments that well as he cuts off the cage and makes his opponents work. He does have some issues with his wrestling defense, but that is unlikely to rear its ugly head in this one. Chovancek prefers to keep it on the feet as well and is just not as good at working from distance.
