The Cincinnati Bengals are 2-0 and atop the AFC North Standings. Happy times in The Queen City, right? Wrong. That’s because two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Joe Burrow left the game in the second quarter with an injury and now might be headed under the knife.
While a ‘turf toe’ doesn’t sound like an ominous injury, that isn’t the case. And that’s what Burrow is dealing with. Burrow, after being sacked by the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive end Arik Armstead with 8:36 to go in the second quarter, ended up at the bottom of a pile-up (never a place you want to end up on the football field). The quarterback came up limping before completely collapsing to the field (collapsed on a football field is another place you don’t want to end up).
After being examined in the injury tent, Burrow attempted to leave the field under his own power before requiring assistance in getting back to the dressing room. After the game, he was seen on crutches with a walking boot on his left foot.
His toe is now in the hands of foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, who will review images of the injured toe and decide the course of action. But surgery is definitely in the cards. If he is operated on, the typical time off for an NFL player is four to five months. Ouch.
Backup quarterback Jake Browning did play well in relief, leading the Bengals to victory by throwing two touchdowns and rushing for one of his own (but he did throw three picks).
Degenerate Spin: If you have Burrow on your fantasy team, this is, of course, devastating news. Grab the best available QB on the waiver wire and hope for the best (or swing a trade). As for gamblers with a Bengals Super Bowl ticket, sorry about your luck – they’ve already moved from 20-1 to 30-1 after the injury.
