MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 13
Detroit Tigers vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
The first frame of this one will see the Tigers getting their hacks. Despite being one of the better hitting teams in the majors, they have struggled at the plate in their last couple games. They’ve scored just five runs in those last two games and have only managed 12 total hits. Now they’ll have to work to score off of Janson Junk. His surface stats may not dazzle at this point, but most of the damage against him comes late in games when the Marlins refuse to pull him. In fact, he hasn’t allowed a first inning run in over a month – a stretch that includes games against the Red Sox and Blue Jays. He should keep that streak in tact here.
Closing out this NRFI should be a bit less of a sweat. Charlie Morton is on the hill for the Tigers. While he’s been hit a bit more lately, he’s been solid for the Tigers since they brough him over from Baltimore. Also, due to his time in Atlanta, he’s familiar with this Marlins lineup. To add to our faith here, it’s not as if the Marlins are a hard team to get out. They are pretty much middle of the pack in every offensive metric that matters here. As a result, I’ll trust that Morton can get this one started right.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 13: No (-105)
Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 6:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
The White Sox are one of the five worst teams in the majors when it comes to scoring runs. Just last week, they managed to crack the 4.00 runs per game mark, which should barely be seen as an accomplishment. After being shutout on Friday, they’ll have to deal with young gun Parker Messick. He’s carrying a 1.93 ERA into action on Saturday. In his four career starts, he’s allowed more than one earned run just one time, and he’s never done worse than three runs in a game. The White Sox should struggle all game here – especially in the first inning.
The bottom of the inning should be a cake walk as well. Despite contending for a playoff spot, the Guardians are actually worse at scoring runs than the White Sox. They are one of four teams that have not cracked that 4.00 runs per game mark. They also rank 24th in the majors in first inning scoring. Davis Martin will be tasked with getting that to continue. He has been great for the White Sox over the last month. In his last six starts, he has allowed just ten total earned runs – putting up a 2.90 ERA in the process.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 13: No (-125)
